This year, Veilig Verkeer Nederland and the Ministry started a pilot project to display school zones and show notifications about them in navigation apps. We supported this initiative with Waze Takeovers. When motorists use Waze and their journey passes through or along a school area that has been selected for this pilot, they receive a notification during the first week of school. The notification takes account of the opening hours of the schools concerned. The ‘Back to school’ notifications were also shown. Drivers could also receive more information about the notification through a call to action. The notification was only sent when they were not driving. We have since used this method to warn almost 200,000 Waze users.
