Date: May 2020

Where: The Netherlands

For Rijkswaterstaat (the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management), we developed a dashboard on which notifications from road users can be displayed. These notifications come from Waze. Road users can indicate where they are annoyed by a damaged road surface. Google Street View can then be used to view the location in question in the dashboard. It is often possible to see an actual crack or suchlike in the road surface.

This visual display and filtering capability makes it easy for Rijkswaterstaat to spot road surface problems and take appropriate action.

The dashboard can be viewed at asfaltkwaliteit.wegstatus.nl. It currently uses a dataset from 01/05/2019 to 01/05/2020. This data allows Rijkswaterstaat to spend longer working on resolving all the issues. They were also given a dataset for internal analysis.

Of course, in future, it will also be possible to display other categories and create public dashboarding systems for this purpose.
